Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center, located right in the heart of Lafayette, evolved from Lafayette Sanitarium, a six-bed facility that opened in 1911, and has been a leader in healthcare throughout its existence. Over the years, Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center has expanded its services and facilities to meet the community’s growing needs — Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center boasts a Center of Excellence in Breast Imaging, has an Accredited Cancer Center, an accredited Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program and is an Advanced Certified Primary Stroke Center, and is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center in Maternity Care and in Bariatrics. A leader in technology, Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center was the first to bring the da Vinci® (a robotic surgical system), CyberKnife® (a stereotactic radiosurgery system) MAKOplasty Orthopedic Surgery and BrightMatter Servo brain surgery to Acadiana. 

Our full-service, tertiary care facility offers a highly trained staff and excellent physicians to bring about positive patient outcomes. Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center is recognized by federal and state tax laws as a 501©(3) not-for-profit corporation. As a community-owned-and-managed hospital, all decisions are made locally by an experienced administrative team, a volunteer Membership Corporation and a Board of Trustees.

Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center staffs a total of 461 beds, including 334 at its main campus, 93 at its Ochsner Lafayette General Orthopedic campus and 24 at the Behavioral Health Unit. It is the largest full-service acute-care medical center in Acadiana.

Accreditations and Awards

Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence: The Infectious Disease Society of America has designated Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center as a Center of Excellence in Antimicrobial Stewardship. One of only three of its kind in the state, this designation is given to facilities whose antimicrobial stewardship programs go above and beyond in their requirements to ensure patients' infections are effectively and safely treated. 

Blue Distinction Center Designation: Selected by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center has been named a Blue Distinction Center Plus for knee replacement, hip replacement and spine surgeries. Ochsner LGMC is one of only four facilities in Louisiana to receive the Blue Distinction designation for spine surgery and only one of three to receive Blue Distinction Plus designation for spine surgery.

Gold Seal of Approval: Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center is certified by The Joint Commission for Disease-Specific Care for Joint Replacement of the Hip, Knee and Shoulder giving it the Gold Seal of Approval among Acadiana hospitals. The national survey firm Press Ganey, Inc., places Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center in the top 1% in the nation for orthopedic patient satisfaction, making it clear that Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center is the optimal place for orthopedic care. There’s no stronger endorsement of care than the word of our patients.

Emergency Department

Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center has the busiest emergency department in Acadiana and handles the highest level of trauma in the region as a Level II Trauma Center. The hospital’s 34-bed adult intensive care unit is staffed 24/7 by intensivists (physicians specializing in critical care), while the 31-bed neonatal intensive care unit boasts benchmark status in key performance indicators by the Vermont Oxford Network.
