Community Outreach

Ochsner Lafayette General strives to help the people we serve in a variety of ways by having affiliates with rural hospitals to improve access to services; directly supports several charitable entities by sponsoring, participating in or facilitating events and functions that help raise funds for several causes and organizations; and we offer and provide numerous health screenings and free support group meetings throughout the year.

The rural hospitals affiliated with Ochsner Lafayette General are in a better position to share information, increase purchasing power, consolidate services and reduce costs. Electronic medical record-keeping is another advantage ensuring that information is accurate and up to date, especially if a patient transfers within the health system. The affiliation also allows physician relationships to be leveraged to provide specialty services that otherwise wouldn’t be feasible. More importantly, affiliated hospitals align with advanced clinical protocols and best practices ingrained in the Ochsner Health culture.

Some of the charities that Ochsner Lafayette General has recently supported include: Community Foundation of Acadiana, American Heart Association, Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens, Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana, the Oil Center Association, Heartstrings & Angel Wings, March of Dimes, Goodwill Industries of Acadiana, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Affiliated Blind of Louisiana, Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, Camp Bon Coeur, Miles Perret Cancer Services, National Kidney Foundation, Hearts of Hope, Maddie's Footprints, United Way of Acadiana and the American Cancer Society. Ochsner Lafayette General also provided in excess of $100 million of charity services to our community.

Support groups and classes offered: Labor and delivery education classes, newborn care classes, sibling relationship classes, breastfeeding classes, Happiest Baby techniques, infant CPR classes, Acadiana Stroke Support Group, Weight Loss Surgery Support Group, Acadiana Ostomy Support Group, Lullabyes Bereavement Support Group, Parents of Multiples Support Group and natural childbirth classes.  

Screenings offered throughout the year: Pocket EKG Heart Fairs; glaucoma screenings; cholesterol screenings; colorectal cancer risk screenings; blood pressure checks; and diabetes testing.

Community Reports

Annually, Ochsner Lafayette General has more than 750,000 patient encounters, while the health system offered a charitable allowance in excess of $345 million. Our property and assets total nearly $500 million, employing approximately 4,500 staff.

Community Health Needs Assessment

As part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) passed in 2010, not-for-profit hospital organizations are required to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) once every three years. The CHNA assesses the health issues within a community and the community’s access to services related to those issues. This allows a hospital organization to plan and implement a strategy to address the health needs of the community it serves. The Community Needs Assessment is a publicly disclosed document that discusses the scope, characteristics, methodology and findings found within the study.
