In-Patient Rehabilitation Unit at Ochsner Lafayette General Orthopaedic Hospital
The rehabilitation unit located at Ochsner Lafayette General Orthopaedic Hospital—An Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center Campus achieved The Joint Commission’s Disease Specific Certification as a Stroke Rehabilitation Unit in 2015. It offers a continuum of multidisciplinary individualized care and intensive therapy programs that helps patients reach maximal medical/functional potential to return home with a decreased occurrence of re-admittance.
The expanded Physical Rehabilitation Unit, licensed for 21 beds, is self-contained on the 4th floor of the hospital. Each patient occupies a private room with a full bathroom; and shares public areas, such as therapy rooms and the dining room, for activities. Placing our patients in the company of others with similar goals and challenges provides motivation and encouragement.

A Team Approach
When you are recovering from a serious illness, injury, or have lost your independence, the setting where you receive therapy can have a substantial effect on your ability to heal. Our inpatient rehab facility is staffed and equipped to ensure you can reach maximal potential and return home safely. The patient and family members interact with a team of professionals from several medical disciplines—each of whom will conduct an independent exam and evaluation, coordinate care and provide the most appropriate plan for your individual needs.

Independence Through Therapy
Therapists help patients and their families learn skills that can successfully be put into practice at home.
Physical Therapy – Will work to improve joint range of motion, muscle function and strength, endurance and coordination.
Occupational Therapy – Will help you learn and/or relearn the skills to care for yourself, such as feeding, grooming, hygiene and dressing.
Recreational Therapy – Will use a variety of recreational activities to improve your physical, mental and emotional well being, so that you can enjoy life and become active once again.
Speech Therapy – Can help you develop, understand and express meaningful language through writing, talking and other forms of communication; will also assist you with your ability to swallow, if needed.
Discharge Planning
Developing a plan to get you home begins from the moment you enter the Rehab Unit. Your level of functional independence will determine when you are discharged and whether further rehabilitation is needed on an outpatient or home health basis. Therapists will make recommendations for a smooth transition to home with the appropriate assistive devices and support, if necessary.
