Ochsner Lafayette General High-Risk Breast Clinic
The High-Risk Breast Clinic at the Ochsner Lafayette General Breast Center specializes in risk assessment, monitoring and treatment of individuals who are at an increased risk for breast cancer. Our team of breast care specialists provide a comprehensive evaluation and assessment to identify your personal risk factors. Using a patient-centered, multidisciplinary team approach, we will work with you to develop a personalized risk-management plan. Your plan might include, additional screening to closely monitor your breast health, breast cancer prevention medications, and/or preventative surgeries.
What does “high risk” mean?
If you are assessed as having a high risk for breast cancer, it does not mean that you will develop the disease. “High risk” indicates that your chance of developing breast cancer is greater than average. Knowing your risk factors can help you make proactive decisions about your health care.

Some conditions or risk factors known to increase risk for breast cancer include:
- Familial and genetic factors
- Family history of breast/ovarian cancer or known cancer mutation in yourself or family members
- BRCA 1 or BRCA 2
- Additional mutations with possible increased breast cancer risk include: ATM, BARD1, BRIP1, CDH1, CHECK2, EPCAM, FANCC, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, NBN, PALB2, PMS2, PTEN, RAD51C, RAD51D, TP53 and XRCC2
- Neurofibromatosis and other hereditary syndromes with potential breast cancer risk
- Atypical imaging and tissue-based (breast biopsy) findings
- Atypical findings on a mammogram or dense breast tissue
- Atypical findings on previous breast biopsy (needle or surgical) such as, atypical ductal hyperplasia, atypical lobular hyperplasia, lobular carcinoma in situ, flat epithelial atypia, papilloma, radial scar/complex sclerosing lesion and sclerosing adenosis
- Multiple prior breast biopsies
- High risk based on risk-assessment models – lifetime risk calculated to be greater than 20%
- Radiation treatment to the chest area between ages 10 and 30

Be Proactive in Your Breast Care
It is important to remember that all women–with or without risk factors–need to follow recommended screening guidelines. If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as lumps or bumps, skin discoloration, dimpling of the skin, nipple discharge or nipple inversion, it is important to be examined by a healthcare provider–even if your recent mammogram was negative (or normal). Call your primary care physician or the High-Risk Breast Clinic if you have any of these symptoms.
