Allergy Testing

Do you suffer with congestion, itchy, watery eyes, coughing, wheezing or other symptoms, resulting in reduced quality of life and trial and error with multiple medications to get relief?

Allergies affect as many as 2.6 billion people worldwide – and billions spent on over-the-counter allergy medications annually in the Unites States.
But nearly 65% of people diagnosed with allergic rhinitis who are prescribed antihistamines have symptoms that are not due to allergies. The only way to really know is with a test.

What is Allergy Testing?

Performed by a healthcare provider or allergy specialist, allergy testing determines if your body is sensitized to a known substance such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites or certain foods. It’s helpful for discovering what is causing any itchy eyes, breathing trouble or skin irritation you may be experiencing, and can help your provider create an optimal treatment plan that determines what precautions to take and how to decrease your exposure to certain triggers.

Here at Ochsner Lafayette General, we’re the only health system in the region to offer ImmunoCAP™ Specific IgE testing, a simple but incredibly effective blood test that aids in the diagnosis of allergic disease.

ImmunoCAP Specific IgE Blood Testing

Specific IgE blood testing is a simple blood draw and can be considered for patients with a history of:

  • Asthma
  • Recurrent or chronic rhinitis
  • Seasonal or allergy-like symptoms
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Atopic dermatitis

Unlike traditional allergy testing, IgE blood tests can be performed irrespective to age, skin condition, antihistamine use, symptoms or pregnancy status. IgE testing accurately identifies specific allergen sensitization in patients with confirmed allergies.
