University Hospital & Clinics Oncology Unit Undergoing Renovations

University Hospital & Clinics has announced plans to redesign its 10-bed outpatient Oncology Unit to help improve patient access and efficiency. The unit, which serves as both the Oncology Clinic and Infusion Clinic, sees approximately 400-500 Oncology patients per month. That high patient volume allows only limited space for infusions on days when the Oncology Clinic is open.

Plans are to renovate the fifth-floor wing of the hospital known as “5 East” to construct a new nurse’s station. Then, the Infusion Clinic will be separated from the Oncology Clinic by relocating there once renovations are complete. With completion expected by the end of April, the infusion area will be a 14-bed space, with room for potential growth.

A second phase of the renovation will include updating the existing Oncology Clinic. New space will be created to accommodate more staffing of the Oncology Clinic. Freed-up space will also provide more room for residents to practice during Oncology rotations with UHC’s Director of Oncology, Dr. Windy Dean-Colomb.

“This is an exciting development for our patients and residents who will be better served by these improvements,” says Dr. Colomb. “We continue to enhance our approach to oncology at UHC, and as Director of Oncology, I’m glad to see things heading in such a positive direction,” she says.

All of these improvements are intended to improve throughput and comfort for patients receiving cancer services, and is another upgrade at the hospital paid for by Lafayette General Health.
