Launch of the Mayci Breaux Scholarship Fund through Lafayette General Foundation was announced in a celebration event at Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) this afternoon.
The scholarship was established in memory of Mayci Breaux, a radiologic technology student whose life was taken during the Grand Theatre shooting July 23, 2015. Mayci attended orientation at LGMC for rad tech students on June 18, 2015, in preparation to begin her clinicals at the facility.
What started with a $100 donation from a radiology technician in Montana quickly accumulated. Donations to Lafayette General Foundation establishing the scholarship, with the cooperation of Mayci’s family, came from Lafayette General Health employees, local businesses and other philanthropic organizations to honor Mayci’s legacy as a rad-tech student. On Wednesday, a donation was made on behalf of everyone affected by the theater shooting, in the amount of $5,000 from Bo and Jerry Ramsay. This raised the fund’s total to $25,000.
Eligibility for the scholarship is as follows:
The deadline for entering this year’s scholarship is July 29 by 5 p.m. Each scholarship will be paid directly to the educational institution. The scholarship winner(s) will be publically announced on Sept. 25, Mayci Breaux’s birthday. The Breaux Family has offered to participate in evaluating the applications, but a selection committee will make the final determination.
The scholarship will be sustained in perpetuity by awarding scholarships based only from interest accrued on the account. The scholarship fund will continue to grow from donations to the Foundation, and through proceeds from Lafayette General’s annual gumbo cook-off fund-raiser.
