April 1, 2016

On Friday, April 1, LOPA (Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency), Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) and Southern Eye Bank (SEB) honored local heroes who have given the gift of life through organ, tissue and cornea donation. A flag raising ceremony was held in La Place de Vie at LGMC. A donor family and recipient shared their stories at the event. The Donate Life Flag will fly the entire month of April at LGMC to raise awareness for the critical need of organs and tissues for transplant.

In 2015, 25 organs were recovered for transplant from LOPA heroes at LGMC, saving the lives of 20 people awaiting transplant. Southern Eye Bank presented Lafayette General with their Vision Champion Award. This award is in recognition of the outstanding professional collaboration and compassionate service to patients and their families that have advanced the Gift of Sight through ocular tissue donation. 48 people received the Gift of Sight and 13 donations were made to research from cornea donors at Lafayette General in 2015.
