Lafayette General Medical Center Named One of America’s Best Stroke Centers

Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) has received the 2016 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Stroke Centers. This evidence-based designation is the only Stroke Center award that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that considers female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence and what women say they want from a hospital.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA), stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause of adult disability. Every 40 seconds, someone suffers a stroke, resulting in more than 795,000 affected annually, and 137,000 deaths. According to the AHA, 1 in 3 women will die of heart disease or stroke.

The list of national award winners, including LGMC, represents hospitals that have met the high standards of The Joint Commission, AHA and ASA.

Hospitals that have earned this award must first hold an Advanced or Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification, recognizing centers that meet high standards for stroke care as determined by The Joint Commission.

LGMC is a Comprehensive Advanced Stroke Center, which is required in order to win this award. To be a Comprehensive Advanced Stroke Center, LGMC must meet additional requirements.

• The time from ER arrival to head CT scan results (top 80% nationally)
• The time from first symptoms to receiving thrombolytic therapy (top 80% nationally)
• Provision of stroke education for patient and family before discharge (top 80% nationally)
• Patient recommendation scores above the national average
• Rated Better or No Different than the national rate for 30-day mortality measure and
• Rated Better or No Different than the national rate for 30-day readmission measure
