Lafayette General Hosting Luncheon for Volunteers

Lafayette General Health will be celebrating National Healthcare Volunteer Week, April 12-18. A luncheon to honor the system’s volunteers is scheduled for 11 a.m. on April 15 at the Cajundome Convention Center.

Without volunteers, hospitals would struggle to staff positions that help make the hospital experience a positive one. Volunteers serve across the Lafayette General Health (LGH) system in a variety of ways, such as: greeting visitors, manning information desks, providing pastoral care, serving as cashiers, offering encouragement to patients, delivering food and drinks to rooms, to name a few. Most LGH volunteers serve primarily through three groups, the Ladies Auxiliary, Pastoral Care or Friends in Deed programs.

As a non-profit system, LGH benefits tremendously from the services provided by volunteers. Excess margins, or profits, generated by the health system do not go to shareholders, but are invested back into the organization for facility upgrades and to purchase new technology. Without some 200+ volunteers across the system, LGH would have to compensate some 26,000 working hours to make up for the services offered by volunteers just last year. Therefore, their contribution has a direct impact on the quality of care the system provides as a community-owned hospital system.
