Komen Awards Grants to Lafayette General Health

Susan G. Komen Acadiana has awarded two grants to Lafayette General Foundation (LGF) for St. Martin Hospital (SMH) in Breaux Bridge, and University Hospital & Clinics (UHC) in Lafayette, totaling $119,643.00. The grants from Komen Acadiana to LGF will support screenings, mammograms, patient education and patient navigation services. The aim of the grant is to impact women who are uninsured or underinsured.

The grant for SMH will focus on women over 40 who are in need of a mammogram living in the parishes of Iberia, Lafayette, and St. Martin. Women under 40 will qualify if they have a first-degree family history of breast cancer. Women with Medicaid and Medicare are eligible under this grant. The second grant, in favor of UHC, will fund a Nurse Navigator who serves patients from many parishes across Acadiana. The Nurse Navigator helps patients, who have an abnormality found during screening, to receive the appropriate diagnostics and follow-up treatment. The Patient Navigator will also assist patients with making or rescheduling appointments and overcoming any obstacles that may prevent them from accessing treatment.

Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and Komen Acadiana is among over one hundred affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen affiliates fund innovative breast health programs that provide vitally needed breast cancer screening, medical supplies, financial assistance (including emergency living expenses and insurance co-pays), as well as patient and family support.
