Hurricane Harvey Safety Tips

By Lafayette General Health
August 25, 2017

Lafayette General Health system and all of its hospitals are completing the necessary checklists in the event Southwest and South Central Louisiana are impacted by Hurricane Harvey. As the region’s trauma program, Lafayette General Medical Center is preparing for a potential influx of patients if hospitals in low lying areas are evacuated.

The community can assist with public safety by following five basic guidelines.

1. Do not “joyride” in areas experiencing flooding or down trees and power lines.
2. If you have to get on the road, always wear your seat belt and don’t text and drive. Every seven minutes someone is injured in a motor vehicle crash in Louisiana.
3. Do not drink collected rainwater nor runoff water. While flowing (or stagnant) water may look pure, it can still be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites and other contaminants.
4. If you lose power, battery operated lights are preferred, such as flashlights and flameless LED candles. Never fall asleep with lit candles in your home and always ensure that your generator is outside and well vented.
5. Consider using the ER only for emergencies. If you are in danger or experiencing health problems, call 9-1-1 immediately, before considering going out into the storm.
