Gynecologic Surgical Oncologist Ricky Owers Joins Cancer Center of Acadiana

Gynecologic Surgical Oncologist Ricky L. Owers, M.D., has joined Cancer Center of Acadiana (CCA) at Lafayette General. Dr. Owers broadens the scope of CCA as a comprehensive regional center for cancer diagnosis and treatment. He will see patients starting August 10th.

Dr. Owers has tremendous knowledge and understanding about cancer in female patients. He also brings many specialized services with a special interest in minimally invasive robotic surgery for many benign complex gynecologic cases and most endometrial and cervical cancers. Additionally, Dr. Owers offers CO2 laser surgery for most precancerous lesions of the vulva, vagina and cervix.

Previously, Dr. Owers was Director of Gynecologic Oncology, and the Primary Investigator of Gynecologic Research Studies, at Christus Shumpert Health System Cancer Treatment Center in Shreveport. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, and graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

A native of Lafayette, graduating from Acadiana High School, Dr. Owers completed his residency at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. He did his fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, in Bronx, NY. Dr. Owers will be moving back home to Lafayette with his wife, Christie Owers, also a Lafayette native, and their five children.

A veteran of the Navy, Dr. Owers served in active duty in Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990. He is a Junior Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; an Associate Member of the American Association for Cancer Research; a Candidate in the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists; and an Associate Member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
